The stream will be offline for a little while until it can find a home on one of the lesser loaded servers.
The new server is active.
The main relaying server will be down for a while today — it’s being upgraded. I have no idea when, or how long it will take. It’s very remote.
The power supply to the array holding the music has died. Hopefully I’ll get a new one tomorrow.
It’s back, a little bit…
With a terrible regret I’m closing down the music stream to external access at least temporarily. It’s a very strange feeling doing so, after almost eight years of openness.
Unfortunately, our bandwidth is limited and we have people and organizations relying on upon services available on this circuit, and lately the bandwidth has been saturated by people listening. It’s a very sad thing — often while I’m working and listening, I see you people connected, and become very happy imagining what you might be thinking as you’re hearing the music as I do — wondering if you might be experiencing similar thoughts and feelings as you hear a piece I had cared enough about to place within that huge vault of sounds.
There is also the issue of the RIAA, and the recent changes in copyright policies that may soon even destroy commercial and non-profit, public stations, by charging insane amounts of money for every song played and every listener hearing them. I have worried that I might hear from these people one day, and even though I have never intended this stream to be oriented toward anyone other than myself and the people I work with, it seems to have always been, generating interest and appreciation from people out there, like you, from all over the world.
I’ve always loved that.
But now, at least for a while, I have to restrict the access. Almost all of you who listen here are Open Source people, too, which makes it all the more sad for me. You people that work in such places as NASA, IBM, Raytheon, the US Army and Navy — I always thought of you working in those places, imagining that having people like you there would somehow influence those organizations toward their own humanistic betterment.
My heart goes out to you, just as I hope and trust that yours goes out to others.
The stream will be down for a while. All the wind here in Seattle has cause a power outage and we’re running on backup generators.
Only critical systems are functioning right now. Alas, this stream is not critical.
Soon, hopefully!
[ As of 0237PST 16Dec06 power is restored and the stream resumed ]
Just added a new entry to the suggested ogg vorbis player listing — foobar2000.
Today outside wind is blowing considerably and the trees limbs knock against wires and poles disrupting the grid.
This stream being knocked down off and on is likely for some time.
It looks like the stream has been breaking up the last few hours. It turns out that the problem was with a few runaway encoding processes on the system.
I think I’ve managed to fix this, but we’ll see.
